T-Mobile denounces shared family data plans

Network providers Verizon and ATT will soon roll out shared data plans, but T-Mobile USA argued such ‘one size fits all’ shared family data plans would not benefit customers.

Using T-Mobile’s Issues Insights Blog, vice president of marketing Andrew Sherrard said he didn’t think that consumers wanted `one size fits all’ shared data plans.

Commenting on the concept of shared data plans, Sherrard said, “Just imagine mom’s email is suddenly unavailable because her teenage son watched an HD movie on his phone, consuming the family’s data allotment.”

The executive stressed that T-Mobile is still sticking by the idea that family members can be better served by offering them individual data packages.

In addition, he used the opportunity to tout hotspot functionality which can be enabled on numerous Android handsets to widen connectivity options, but he did not mention the carrier’s new tougher policy on charging customers for the technology.

Sherrard also highlighted that T-Mobile does not charge customers more for exceeding their monthly data limits; rather the carrier relies on throttling to discourage excessive usage.

GM to miss out on high-priced Super Bowl advertising

GM to miss out on high-priced Super Bowl advertising

American auto giant General Motors Co. (GM) has confirmed that it would not advertise its products in the next Super Bowl.

Confirming its decision to forego advertising in the February 3 broadcast of Super Bowl XLVII, GM held sharp price increase demanded by CBS responsible for its decision.

Joel Ewanick, marketing chief at GM, said, “We understand the reach the Super Bowl provides, but with the significant increase in price, we simply can’t justify the expense.”

The Super Bowl is a championship game of National Football League in the U. S. It is well-known for high-profile adverts that are aired during the television broadcast. These adverts reach more than ninety million viewers.

Adverts for upcoming National Football League championship game are up by around 9 per cent, selling for nearly $3.8 million for a thirty-second spot.

Earlier on Tuesday, the auto giant announced its decision to stop paid ads on social-networking site Facebook. The automaker said it would rely on the social network’s free content.

GM stressed that paid adverts did little to convince consumer to purchase GM automobiles.

Last year, GM spent a whopping $4.7 billion on advertising.

Ultrabook laptops aren’t just clones of MacBook Air

Ultrabook laptops aren't just clones of MacBook Air

Just like Apple’s MacBook Air, Windows-based ultrabooks are sleek, ultra-slim and often feature silver, but they are not clones of Apple machines.

Apple rivals such as HP argue that the MacBook Air’s silver body, black chic let keyboard, slim design is not exclusive to the Cupertino firm. Ultrabooks offer a unique blend of performance, style and features that is not available on Apple’s MacBook Air.

Stacy Wolff, design executive at computer maker HP, recently said silver is now and then the right choice, and Apple does not “own silver.”

According to Wolff, “Apple may like to think that they own silver, but they don’t. In no way did HP try to mimic Apple. In life there are a lot of similarities.”

Wolff admitted that there could be some similarities among different devices, but added that the similarities have nothing to do with copying the Cupertino firm; rather they are merely due the way the technology has developed.

For example, the new HP Envy Spectre XT Ultrabook looks a lot like Apple’s the MacBook Air but there are a lot of differences between the two, such as the Envy Spectre XT ultrabook features a magnesium body, a brushed design and a rubber coating on its bottom, while Apple’s MacBook Air features aluminum with no pattern or bottom coating.

Apple to use renewable sources to power Maiden data center

Apple to use renewable sources to power Maiden data center

Cupertino, California-based distinguished gadgets maker Apple has announced that it would use renewable sources to power its 500,000sq.-foot data center in Maiden, North Carolina, by the end of current year.

Apple’s North Carolina-based data center is currently running on the low-priced but partially coal-powered Duke Energy grid.

The company official website stated, “By the end of 2012, we’ll meet the energy needs of our Maiden, North Carolina-based data center using entirely renewable sources.”

Apple made the announcement following a week of protests in front of its headquarters in Cupertino. Greenpeace demonstrators have long been criticizing the iPhone/iPad-maker for using too much coal to power the huge data center.

The Gadgets maker said it would generate 60 per cent of electricity required by the Maiden data center itself, using a huge number of fuel cells and solar panels deployed in a field close to the data center. It also said that it owns another 100-acre site in close proximity to the data center. Once completed, these projects will generate 124 million kilowatt hours of electricity per annum.

Greenpeace welcomed Apple’s announcement, saying the announcement is a sign that the Cupertino firm is taking its thousands of customers demand seriously that they want services powered by clean energy, rather than by dirty coal.

Activision, EA hit out-of-court settlement over execs’ leaving

Activision, EA hit out-of-court settlement over execs' leaving

Gaming giants Activision Blizzard Inc. and Electronic Arts (EA) Inc. agreed to settle a lawsuit over executives’ leaving out of court on Wednesday.

Activision had accused EA of inappropriately recruiting two of its executives who had overseen the production of the hit video title “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.”

Activision had claimed EA met secretly with its two executives, viz. Vincent Zampella and Jason West, while they were still working on “Modern Warfare” projects at Activision.

Blaming EA of inappropriately hiring its executives, Activision had sought $400 million from the rival gaming giant.

On Wednesday, the two gaming companies released a joint statement saying they “have agreed to put this matter behind them”. But, they didn’t disclose any details on the settlement.

In January 2010, Activision fired Vincent Zampella and Jason West, accusing the duo of insubordination and handing over the company’s secrets to EA.

After being fired, Zampella and West created a new company called Respawn Entertainment LLC, which develops games for EA.

The new Bing, at least two-third of it, now live in US

The new Bing, at least two-third of it, now live in US

The notably revamped version of Bing search engine previewed by Microsoft last week has now been released to the US users, who can now opt in either to the banner which appears on www. Bing. com, or opt in at bing. com/new.

However, the new Bing version is only two-third live in the US, and it does not currently bring in all the new features which Microsoft announced for the revamped search engine at the Search Summit last week. As of now, the users of the overhauled Bing version can only sign in with a Facebook or Windows Live account; with Twitter, LinkedIn, and Quora support coming soon.

The new look of the overhauled Bing version – which apparently is the search engine most significant revamp till now – marks the incorporation of two sidebars, a `Snapshot’ sidebar and a social sidebar. In addition, the search result pages of Bing have been notably streamlined, with the left hand sidebar having been done away with and several distracting elements on the page having been minimized.

Currently, the users who opt in to the new Bing – after their log-in to Facebook on Bing. com and/or connecting social services to their Windows Live ID – will find that the Snapshot sidebar has not yet gone live; and only the social sidebar is available.

Revealing that the Snapshot sidebar is presently being tested on `a small subset of users,’ a Microsoft spokesperson said that the feature will soon be made available more widely to the US users of Bing.

E-book publishers lose bid to kill antitrust suit

E-book publishers lose bid to kill antitrust suit

On Tuesday, Apple and five book publishers – HarperCollins, Hachette SA, Simon Schuster, Penguin Group, and Macmillan – lost their bid to kill the antitrust lawsuit which accuses them of violation of federal and California state law by conniving to increase the price of e-books.

With the U. S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan ruling that the e-book publishers broke the law in setting e-book prices, the defendants have lost their bid to throw out the antitrust complaint by plaintiffs who are seeking to represent a class of consumers.

In her written verdict, Judge Cote – who is overseeing the government lawsuit as well as private antitrust complaints filed in federal court – turned down the plaintiffs’ request to dismiss the lawsuit; and cited confident e-book pricing-related statements made by the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Judge Cote said that Jobs had clearly stated that the e-book pricing deals between Apple and the publishers will probably have the consumers paying “a little more” — a situation which, according to Jobs, was what the publishers “want anyway.” In addition, the judge also noted that Jobs had also said that the prices of e-books at Apple and Amazon. com would be “the same.”

Rebuffing the argument by Apple and the publishers that their e-book deal was largely aimed at improving the efficiencies of distribution, Judge Cote said: “It has everything to do with coordinating a horizontal agreement among publishers to raise prices, and eliminating horizontal price competition among Apple’s competitors at the retail level.”

Microsoft supports Pirate Pay torrent ‘blocker’

Microsoft supports Pirate Pay torrent 'blocker'

Software giant Microsoft has backed Russian firm Pirate Pay torrent blocking tool that aims to discourage illegal file-sharing.

To support Pirate Pay in its efforts against downloading of pirated material, Microsoft has awarded the Russian firm one million rubles (around $100,000) through one of its investment funds.

The innovative technology that has received high-profile praise from Microsoft, film studios and others, has already worked for Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios to prevent a great number of illegal downloads.

Speaking about the technology, Pirate Pay chief executive Andrei Klimenko said, “After creating the prototype, we realized we could more generally prevent files from being downloaded, which meant that the program had great promise in combating the spread of pirated content.”

Recently, Pirate Pay protected a new Russian film called Vysotsky. The technology reportedly blocked a total of 44,845 attempted illegal downloads of the movie.

Entertainment industry has long been fighting against illegal file sharing. Music companies and film studios claim that downloads of pirated material cost the industry billions of dollars in lost revenue every year.
