Network providers Verizon and ATT will soon roll out shared data plans, but T-Mobile USA argued such ‘one size fits all’ shared family data plans would not benefit customers.
Using T-Mobile’s Issues Insights Blog, vice president of marketing Andrew Sherrard said he didn’t think that consumers wanted `one size fits all’ shared data plans.
Commenting on the concept of shared data plans, Sherrard said, “Just imagine mom’s email is suddenly unavailable because her teenage son watched an HD movie on his phone, consuming the family’s data allotment.”
The executive stressed that T-Mobile is still sticking by the idea that family members can be better served by offering them individual data packages.
In addition, he used the opportunity to tout hotspot functionality which can be enabled on numerous Android handsets to widen connectivity options, but he did not mention the carrier’s new tougher policy on charging customers for the technology.
Sherrard also highlighted that T-Mobile does not charge customers more for exceeding their monthly data limits; rather the carrier relies on throttling to discourage excessive usage.
